Inks & Mixed Media

The autumn course, based on acrylic inks and mixed media, focused on the use of surface texture to create effects.

We used texture paste applied with a palette knife, we selected fabrics such as hessian, scrim and lace and applied them with gesso. We also created some nice effects using tissue which again was applied with texture paste.

Once these base preparations were dry we applied water and then 'let loose' with acrylic inks which flowed and meandered around the surfaces we had created to amazing effect. Lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ at this point (always my favourite moment!).

The students were a responsive group and totally fell for the colour magic that happened when the inks touched the watered surface of the paper.

The course was meant to last for five sessions but so inspired and talented were my group of students that they opted to continue for a further three weeks.

The good news is that many of them have signed up for the new course commencing in January.

They realise there is so much to learn and to date I am impressed with their work and their realisation that all I do is give them a platform from which to develop their own ideas and skills.
